When you install the indicator rod section of the toggle chain into the hub, it's usually best to screw it in finger tight, then back it off half a turn. For 3-speed hubs, select 2nd gear then adjust the cable tension with the barrel adjuster on the cable connector end of the Toggle Chain till the end of the indicator rod is flush with the rear axle when viewed through the axle nut's inspection hole.
